"The brain can get sick too."
Re-make of this post.
End mental health stigma.
Probably about a year ago, a coworker of mine brought in some cookies that his wife had made for me. She knew from talking to her husband that I was on a gluten free diet, so she wanted to share a gluten free cookie mix she’d found. My coworker spent a couple of days asking whether I’d tried them before I actually got around to eating them. It seemed his wife was really anxious to know what I thought. When I told him I liked them, he came back the next day with a box of the mix. She had accidentally ordered more than she thought she had, so she wanted me to have the extra.
A couple months after that, she died suddenly. One day my coworker was out because she was in the hospital. The next day we got word that she was gone.
I finally made the cookies today, and I cried as soon as I tasted them. I never met this woman. I don’t know what she looked like, or what her voice sounded like. The exchange I just described was the only interaction I ever had with her. But here I am several months later, crying over cookies, because a wonderful woman I didn’t know gave them to me.
Never underestimate the power you have to touch someone’s life, even if you may never know you did.
This is Tonker. Tonker desperately needs a home, or else he’s in danger of being put down THIS FRIDAY because his owner is an irresponsible git.
Here’s the story: Tonker has been living well over a year (possibly two) chained up outside. He has a doghouse, but it’s a tiny little shittily made one. This is in the higher areas of Nevada so, even though we’re in a desert, we’re more likely to get rain and we definitely get snow everytime winter comes around. Not once is Tonker ever brought inside.
Tonker also rarely gets attention from anyone who isn’t my Nana or myself. For one thing, his owner has some sort of job that means he’s rarely ever home for very long. Secondly, his owner just doesn’t seem to plain care. My nana’s talked to him before and apparently he doesn’t let Tonker in the house because he doesn’t want his floors scratched up. I can count the number of times I’ve seen him outside with that dog on one hand- and we are his neighbors who can see where Tonker is chained up right from our living room and computer room. I don’t think they even had a leash for this dog for the longest time until the owner’s sister got him one just this year. The chain they use to keep him outside is so shitty that Tonker has gotten loose numerous times and chased the tires of passing trucks. I shouldn’t have to tell you how dangerous this is, and it only becomes worse when you realize we live right next to a highway. It’s only a matter of time before this dog gets hit by a car.
Tonker is an obnoxiously friendly and loving dog, he really is. He does have a slight jumping problem, but that’s mainly because no one is ever around to train him. Because his owner is a piece of shit human being, this dog has been neglected and thus doesn’t know many commands (although I’ve managed to get him to sit) and isn’t completely socialized. Still, Tonker is a really eager dog who wants to learn, wants some love and attention. He’s just in the worst place for it, mostly because he has one of the worst people for it. He HAS been fixed, and we would guess that he is around four years old.
Because Tonker has gotten off his chain so much, his owner is being a pisspoor coward and wants to put him down because he apparently doesn’t have any time to take him to a shelter that will find him a forever home. After a fair bit of yelling on my end, he agreed that he would pay me and my nan the expenses of finding a place to put this dog.
But I need your help, Tumblr.
I’ve already called the Las Vegas SPCA and the Pitbull program that they recommended, neither has any room to take Tonker in. We don’t know where to turn.
If you live in the Southern Nevada area, please contact me. This includes areas around Las Vegas, Pahrump, or Goldfield. We need someone who is willing to take in a loving dog so that he can have a second chance at life with someone who truly cares for him.
